Blind Therapy
Flow Through the Dark
Description:
Opportunity Statement - Augment an institutional shift through creating the potential to explore the ability to trust by interacting with strangers in an anonymous, sight-deprived conversation.
Problem - People feel physical validation is essential to feeling understood in face to face communication.
Solution - Enhance the service participants' potential to explore methods of improving trust and communication in an environment where physical validation is not possible.
For the prototype we brought in 3 sets of volunteers who have not previously met before to speak about sensitive personal matters while blind folded.
Then, we asked them to follow through the same activity with the blind folds removed. We then asked them how they felt about the experience.
The results revealed that the dark environment created a safe space to focus entirely on the conversation, darkness also enhances the ability to articulate and explore thoughts and experiences. Lastly, users also expressed that the illusion of attention made them feel more listened to than face-to-face communication.
Through more iteration, the service will facilitate, without a third party, an environment where the users feel truly comfortable to speak about anything.
