Enabling hearing through creativity...

Description:

One of the most surprising facts about Beethoven is that he was deaf. How can a musician, a composer, lack what we would imagine to be his most important sense?

There are many in our society with impaired hearing. They cannot hear the everyday things that bring pleasure to others - the patter of rain; bird song; rustling leaves; paddling in the surf.... They miss emotional connections and memories these simple pleasures bring. Special efforts are made for other disabilities but their disability is invisible so they go often un-noticed and feel excluded.

Sonico provides a creative way to enable those affected by allowing them to hear effectively again, and to capture, curate and share sounds important to them within a community. A cloud-based sound-bank stores recorded sounds with images. The app measures their hearing capability and provides personalised graphic equalisation to compensate for their disability and restore normal hearing for them. The equaliser allows mixing, sampling and other special effects. The app works with music, radio and video to enable normal hearing without hearing aids, via standard headphones or links through audio equipment.

Sonico is a free service, supported by national charity Action on Hearing Loss, and sponsored by major music streaming services and sound recording apps.
